Advanced Statistics for Better Query Performance

Vern Rabe

When the SQL Server optimizer evaluates a query to determine how “best” to execute it, the statistics are quite possibly the most important information at its disposal. The statistics that are created with an index, or by default on a column when referenced in a predicate, are not always sufficient to give the optimizer sufficient information to make “good enough” plan choices. That’s when you need to step in and manage statistics yourself. In this session, after a brief overview of what statistics are, we’ll explore how creating filtered statistics, creating statistics on multiple columns, or overriding the default maintenance of statistics can help.
